The Emma Johnson Allison Art Awards 1978-2005
Exhibition dates: December 9 - 16, 2005
Each year since 1978, the Twentieth Century Club of Sylva has sponsored the prestigious purchase award from the annual Art Student Competition. The competition recognizes a top Western student from the department of art in honor of Emma Johnson Allison, noted community leader. Selected works are placed around the Western campus in offices and public spaces for greater exposure of emerging talents. This exhibition will feature a selection of award winners from over the years.
The Twentieth Century Club of Sylva was organized in 1923 by "a group of 18 young women who wanted to better their town and county and expected to accomplish great things through excellent projects." In 1925, the club joined the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs, becoming the first federated club in southwestern North Carolina.
Over the years the club has served the Sylva and Jackson County area with a number of accomplishments which include establishing the first town library, contributing annually to several community organizations, and creating the generous annual Emma Johnson Allison Art Award.
